side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For PV installations described in <strong>6.2.1<\/strong> \u0438 <strong>6.2.2<\/strong>, it states that when distance <strong>E<\/strong> between the PV modules and inverter is equal to or greater than <strong>10 m<\/strong>, two sets of SPDs are necessary to sufficiently protect both the PV modules and inverter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p The standard also notes that, for common PV modules, the inverter normally has the lower rated impulse withstand voltage, so installation of the SPD close to the inverter is class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SPD voltage protection level still has to be coordinated with the impulse withstand voltage of the equipment being protected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p the maximum discharge-current capability under the specified 8\/20 \u00b5s test conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It does not eliminate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does the Cable Route Matter, or Only the Cable Length?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The physical cable route matters too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cable length is an easy number to measure, but electromagnetic behavior is influenced by geometry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For surge currents, good practice includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>keeping outgoing and return\/current-path conductors close together where recommends direct earthing between SPD and inverter for optimum overvoltage protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So two systems with the same \u201c10 m cable length\u201d are not necessarily electromagnetically identical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Changes on the AC Side of the Inverter?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An inverter is connected to more than one electrical system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has a DC input from the PV array and an AC connection to the distribution system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IEC 61643-32 also addresses the AC side of the PV installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the AC side, it recommends that where the wiring between the SPD near the origin of the electrical installation and the inverter is <strong>10 \u043c \u0438\u043b\u0438 \u0431\u043e\u043b\u0435\u0435<\/strong>, the inverter should be protected by an additional SPD adjacent to the inverter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the more severe external-LPS configuration described in Clause 6.2.3, the additional SPD at the inverter is mandatory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Phoenix Contact&#8217;s current selection guidance follows the same basic structure, showing an additional AC-side SPD near the inverter when the cable length to the main distribution is 10 m or more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a building has an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/webstore.iec.ch\/en\/publication\/33680\" rel=\"noopener\">external lightning protection system (LPS)<\/a><\/strong>, first determine whether the required separation distance <em>s<\/em> between the lightning protection system and the PV installation is maintained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Separation Distance Maintained<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the IEC configuration where the external LPS exists but separation distance is maintained, Class II tested PV SPDs are used at the relevant DC locations in the arrangement described by IEC 61643-32.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 10 m DC-side placement principle still applies to the configuration covered by 6.2.2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Separation Distance Not Maintained<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If separation distance cannot be maintained, parts of the PV system can carry partial lightning current.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This changes the required protection concept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IEC 61643-32 specifies Class I tested SPDs at the relevant locations for this configuration, and the protection arrangement becomes more stringent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why you should never decide:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cType 2 is enough because the cable is only 8 meters.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">without first knowing the lightning protection condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Distance is only one part of the design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Practical Installation Scenarios<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scenario 1: Small Rooftop conditions, Up coordination, equipment withstand voltage, and manufacturer instructions are satisfied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fact that the distance is below 10 m helps, but it is not the only requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scenario 2: Combiner Box 25 m From the Inverter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PV Array \u2192 Combiner Box + SPD \u2192 25 m DC Cable \u2192 Inverter<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the relevant IEC 61643-32 configurations, the distance is \u226510 m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Protection should therefore be provided at both ends in accordance with the standard
