Standard Type AC and Type A Residual Current Devices (RCDs), which have been the bedrock of electrical safety for decades, are fundamentally blind to smooth DC residual currents. In the presence of such faults, these devices can become desensitized or &#8220;blinded,&#8221; failing to trip not only for the DC fault but also for the very AC faults they are meant to detect.
